In the old center of the coastal town Castellammare del Golfo, an existing Sicilian, gradually grown townhouse was converted into a holiday home. The existing structure consisted in three cubes that differed in height and volume and was opened in such a way that an architectural promenade was accomplished. In the form of a spiral, the promenade leads from a narrow alley through the spaces of the apartment and ends on a terrace with the view towards the sea. To achieve this space continuum, the existing stairs were exposed and all the adjacent rooms but the two bedrooms were integrated into the continuous space by means of breakthroughs, which required structural reinforcements through the installation of steel girders. At the end of the spiral, a large window gives access to the roof terrace, from which, thanks to a slight modification of the existing roof, you can now enjoy an open view of the sea.
