0245 Lemaire Show ×

The goal was to create an immersive space to present the Lemaire summer collection. The client specified the date and location: June 21, 2023, outside the Jussieu Campus, Paris. Based on this context, statistically, it would be a rainy, humid, yet mild day with 22.1°C and 68% humidity.

The project aimed to create a temporary backdrop for the show, utilizing minimal means. On one side, it involved reusing materials from previous installations, such as fabric and furniture; on the other side, it utilized the contextual materials: water, wind, and humidity. Read more

Thus, the concept for the show was centered around the smell of summer rain, a distinctive earthy and pleasant aroma, caused by the chemical reaction of raindrops hitting the ground, releasing compounds such as geosmin from the soil and bacteria. The scent is known as petrichor, which comes from the Greek words “petra,” meaning stone, and “ichor,” which refers to the fluid that flows through the veins of gods in Greek mythology.

Therefore, flags of varying heights were mounted at changing angles along the existing perimeter handrails. This allowed the strong wind to flow through the curtain walls into the space while reducing uncontrolled movements. During the show, the flags became wet, gradually trickling onto the warm stone floor. Upon contact with the heated surface, the water emitted the distinctive smell of summer rain in the city. Furthermore, the water formed puddles, outlining the path for the models walking in the show. By the show's end, the wind had dried both the curtain flags and the stone floor.
