0219 VRMD Zürich ×

VRMD Zurich, a design for a sloping property in Zurich-Wipkingen, enables the interlacing of living and working based on the typology of the 0126 VRMD (VierRichtungsModulDiagonal). In Zurich, it is the service sector, with its variety of working environments and economic needs, which increases the possibility and demand for residential and working spaces. Within just a few decades, the economic structure of the Canton of Zurich and thus the spatial needs of its inhabitants have changed radically. The four directional module for Zurich consists in two 40 square meter volumes stacked on each other and rotated diagonally, forming a 80 square meter maisonette unit. The units allow views in all four directions, which is directly related to their use: north-south is ideal for working, east-west is ideal for living. This means that every resident has an equal share in the course of the day. The architecture thus answers directly to the questions of our time and enables a gentle and flexible separation of functions between living and working within each unit, which also has tax advantages. The external circulation allows for individual addresses and the operation of the building independent of the program. The external circulation becomes a meeting point for the neighborhood and, as a vertical street space, invites you to explore and linger. The concept envisages a building in wood or mixed construction (wood and reinforced concrete) with a high degree of prefabrication, on a two-story dug-in basement (studio and workshop); to minimize prefabrication costs, the volumes are rectangular.
